Brilliance Enterprises is the company that started it all. With a vision to change the culture of business so that people could be their authentic selves in business cultures that supported long term growth and sustainability, BE was created by Lindsay Andreotti and Brian Hilgendorf in 2004 as a consulting firm focused on fast-growth, merging, and changing companies. Our team has created tools, processes, and philosophies that are innovative, life, and business changing for the teams we work with.

The founders of BE are focused on growing BEING and Brilliance Ventures in 2011, and continue to do speaking engagements, teaching, and consulting for businesses who want to truly transform their culture, merge two cultures, or create processes that are more profitable and people-friendly. For more information on connecting with Brian and Lindsay for speaking, please contact lindsay@brillianceenterprises.com.

The Center for Children & Youth Justice will recognize Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll with the 5th annual Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award, to be presented at a breakfast fundraiser for the Center at 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

Carroll earns the award in recognition of his creation of A Better Seattle, the organization he launched in 2011 to combat youth and gang violence in our community.

“We’re thrilled that Coach Carroll has transplanted such a successful program from Los Angeles to help create ‘A Better Seattle’ in his new home,” said Justice Bobbe J. Bridge (ret.), founding president and CEO of the Center for Children & Youth Justice. “Not only is it combating violence and improving the lives of our young people, it has galvanized several key organizations to work together to benefit our community long into the future.”

The Center’s own efforts on gang intervention include initiating the South King County Coordinating Council on Gangs, which is working toward a comprehensive and cooperative process to address gangs throughout communities in South King County and Bellevue.

Partnering with the YMCA and the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, A Better Seattle – also supported by Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer – promotes and funds efforts to deploy former street youth as outreach workers to intervene directly with vulnerable young people. The goal is to help youth avoid gangs or get out safely if they are already involved. The local effort builds upon the success of A Better L.A. Foundation, which Coach Carroll founded when he was coaching at USC.

“We are honored to receive the Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award,” Coach Carroll said. “Our work with A Better Seattle and A Better L.A. is in the spirit of what Mr. Maleng believed. And that work is built on the notion that the greatest of things can happen for young people – especially for the most at-risk and oftentimes overlooked young people – if we provide them with a little coaching and direction. Our street outreach workers are transforming our community by reducing violence and connecting with young people in a way that creates hope and helps them understand what they can become.”

Named in honor of the late King County Prosecuting Attorney, the Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award recognizes those who show exemplary leadership, dedication and commitment to the youth and families of Washington state. Previous recipients include the Maleng family, the law firm Perkins Coie LLC, Anne Ramsay-Jenkins of the College Success Foundation and Jim Mallahan.

In addition to the award presentation, the breakfast will include a keynote address by Gerald Hankerson, who at 18 was convicted of being an accessory to murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Behind bars, he earned his high school diploma, started a program for at-risk youth, participated in a variety of causes aimed at bettering inmates’ lives, and became an advocate for justice system reforms. In 2009, after 22 years in prison, his bid for clemency was successful, and today he works to spread the message that “good things happen when you take personal responsibility for your actions and make good choices.”

Guests at the March 1 event are asked to make a tax-deductible contribution of $150 or more. To register or to learn more, visit the website at www.ccyj.org.

Founded in 2006, the Center for Children & Youth Justice is a nonprofit organization dedicated to shaping better lives for children and youth involved in Washington’s foster care and juvenile justice systems. In partnership with parents, advocates and policymakers, the Center develops and advances innovative approaches to systemic changes that will support kids, stabilize families and strengthen communities.

AtWork! is a highly supportive and innovative conduit between people with disabilities and mainstream employers in the community.

AtWork! approaches its mission of helping people with disabilities be productive, integrated and contributing members of their communities from a unique 360-degree perspective. By focusing as much on the employer’s needs as on its’ clients needs, AtWork! can – and does – strategize, design and create jobs that are valuable, meaningful and deliver a measurable benefit to everyone involved.

When placing clients in new positions, AtWork! provides customized on-site training and continuing on-site support to ensure that both client and employer achieve or surpass the results they expect.

In 1998 AtWork! was created as a result of the merger of Custom Industries (CI) and Community Enterprises of Issaquah (CEI). CI, established in 1962 was Bellevue based and operated two sheltered workshop programs in Bellevue and Kenmore. It was the older and largest of the two programs. Additionally CI operated janitorial and landscaping crews operating out of a small facility in Shoreline. CEI was a smaller organization primarily known in Issaquah, established in 1965. It operated a recycling center that was enthusiastically supported by the local community and a sheltered workshop employing primarily individuals who had graduated from the Issaquah School District.

Thirty years ago when people with disabilities were released from institutions AtWork! was there to provide training. People wove pot holders and other cottage industry work for pennies. It was state-of-the-art. AtWork! was a leader. Soon those workers were saying, “Help us get good jobs, real work, doing important things just like others do at work.”

The Supported Employment movement emerged in the early 90’s and again AtWork! was a leader, launching new enterprises (janitorial, landscaping, assembly, recycling) that to this day provide jobs, training in marketable skills, and wages. Businesses saw new value in diversity. Astute companies hired the first people with disabilities and enjoyed enhanced profits and demonstrated community leadership.

Today AtWork! is a highly supportive and innovative conduit between people with disabilities and mainstream employers that designs customized jobs and provides ongoing support to create mutually beneficial beneficial work relationships.

Here is the info from their listing on the Eastside Business Directory

AtWork!

AtWork!’s mission is to help people with disabilities be productive, integrated and contributing members of their communities. We believe in the transformative power of employment, and provide a highly supportive and innovative conduit between people with disabilities and mainstream employers in the community, enabling people with disabilities and businesses to succeed.

Boutique Hotel and Business Conference Center is Hidden Gem,
Oh So Close to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

By Joe Kennedy

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying an overnight stay at the multiple award-winning Cedarbrook Lodge. This hotel and conference center is hidden away at the end of a non-descript residential street in the community of SeaTac, just barely separated from the very busy SeaTac Strip by 18 acres of very peaceful wetlands – but worlds away from the hustle and bustle of that major thorough fair that runs in front of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Who would have thought of escaping TO SeaTac to get away from it all? It never would have occurred to me without experiencing it for myself – but it was indeed a great place to escape to – especially because we were also able to enjoy a fine gourmet meal in the sustainable tradition of farm to table in the center’s wildly popular Copperleaf Restaurant.

The service throughout the 110-room hotel was fantastic – very friendly, yet non-obtrusive and always ready to serve. The accommodations were nice, cozy and not over the top. Our room came equipped with a queen sized bed, good sized flat panel television, coffee maker with Starbucks coffees, an iron and ironing board, a hair dryer, in room safe, and a couple of very comfortable looking robes that went unused.

One feature that seemed very unique about Cedarbrook Lodge and popular with their guests is that two of the buildings have community ‘living rooms’ with fireplaces, large flat screen tvs, comfortable furniture and free snacks and refreshments. These rooms are an excellent place for those staying in separate rooms to get together and spend some time together without someone having to sit on someone else’s bed.

Other features that were obviously popular with the guests included the bar and pool table just outside Copperleaf Restaurant, the very nice exercise room, free wireless internet (two separate connections), complimentary shuttle to and from the airport and light rail stations and the complimentary Northwest continental breakfast each morning. Several guests were there with their pets and seemed very happy for the hotel’s pet friendly options.

Without a doubt, besides the Lodge’s hidden location so close to the airport, one of the best features about Cedarbrook for businesses is that it is also an amazing meeting, events and convention space – and a fantastic option for companies wanting to host events and meetings conveniently so close to the airport.

Cedarbrook Conference Center was originally built as a conference center and was owned by Washington Mutual Bank until their run was over and they were acquired by JP Morgan Chase. Chase sold the property to Wright Hotels, also the owner of several other west coast and Seattle properties, including world famous Space Needle, in October of 2009. The property was renamed Cedarbrook Lodge and is managed by Coastal Hotel Group, which also operates The Resort at The Mountain and Hotel Fifty in Oregon, as well as the Lodge on the Desert in Tucson, Arizona.

The conference center facilities are amazing – with several options from The Board Room, which can seat 32 banquet style all the way up to Tamarack Hall, which can hold up to 300 people for a cocktail type reception or 225 for theatre seating. Over 18,000 square feet of flexible interior function space. There is also a business center complete with 5 desktop computers, printers and internet access. The views in each room are great, the technology is top notch and it seems like a great place to hold most any type of business event. It seems that one of Cedarbrook’s larger clients these days is Seattle-based Alaska Airlines. It probably makes a lot of sense for them to have a lot of their meetings so close to the airport.

But it’s not just businesses that hold events at Cedarbrook Lodge. Tamarack Hall is also the site of many a wedding and also hosts other social events as well.

Awards: In the relatively short time that Cedarbrook Lodge has been open to the general public, it has garnered many prestigious awards including being ranked #1 in the WORLD by Expedia Insiders’ Select 2011, and ranked #1 in the entire US in the 2011 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards.

Cedarbrook Lodge is located at 18525 36th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98188. They can be found online at www.CedarbrookLodge.com and you can ‘Like’ their Facebook page.
