Google Announces $165,000 Sponsorship for “Open Outdoors for Kids” Initiative

Google Campout KirklandOn Saturday, October 22, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell joined Google to announce a $165,000 sponsorship to the National Park Foundation’s Open OutDoors for Kids, an initiative that helps connect more kids to their national parks through fun and engaging activities. The announcement was made during a campout held on Google’s Kirkland campus together with the U.S. Department of the Interior and YMCA for 60 Seattle-area elementary students.

“On behalf of Interior, I want to thank Google for their generous donation to help fourth graders from disadvantaged communities experience the great outdoors,” said Secretary Jewell.  “Spending a day and night on the Cross Kirkland Corridor for these youngsters is a reminder that there are accessible public lands close by every community that enable family, friends and kids of all ages to enjoy nature. Experiences like we’re having today not only provide meaningful learning opportunities, but also plant seeds that will nurture future generations of outdoor stewards.” [Read more…]

Kiwanis Bellevue Club Helps Spread the Wealth

bellevue-kiwanis walnutsTalk about a trickledown effect – The Kiwanis club of Bellevue makes an annual trek to Carlton Washington and spends the weekend harvesting walnuts donated by the Brown Bear Lodge and the Brown family. Club president Al Shot “We donate the majority of the finished walnuts to our Key Clubs. They will sell them to family and friends with the proceeds helping with their respective club expenses … mostly attending the annual DCON conference”.

The club supports International, Interlake, Newport and Bellevue high school Key Clubs, which last year’s sales helped with sending 146 students to 2016 DCON.

The nuts are hand packed by the club and will be available in mid-November – just in time for a favorite meal, hostess gift or office party. They are said to be the absolute sweetest tasting walnuts EVER since they grow in the elevation of Carlton WA … just like the delicious apples from there!

Elder & Adult Day Services (EADS) Merges with Easterseals Washington (ESW) to Provide Services to More Individuals and Families

Adult day programs allow seniors who are experiencing disabilities due to aging to remain safe and active in their communities. They contribute to the development of skills and relationships for adults with developmental disabilities, and they bring peace of mind and respite time to family caregivers. Adults with disabilities and their families need options, and that is just what this program expansion provides.

Elder and Adult Day Services (EADS) has now joined forces with Easterseals Washington (ESW), whose purpose is to change the way the world defines and views disabilities by making profound, positive differences in people’s lives every day. Effective October 17, 2016, EADS has merged completely into ESW, allowing its three adult day health and recreation centers to continue as an official part of the Easterseals Washington organization. The programs in Bellevue, Des Moines and Bremerton provide a state-certified environment that assures regular health care, stimulating activities and a supportive community. [Read more…]
