Carroll earns the award in recognition of his creation of A Better Seattle, the organization he launched in 2011 to combat youth and gang violence in our community.

“We’re thrilled that Coach Carroll has transplanted such a successful program from Los Angeles to help create ‘A Better Seattle’ in his new home,” said Justice Bobbe J. Bridge (ret.), founding president and CEO of the Center for Children & Youth Justice. “Not only is it combating violence and improving the lives of our young people, it has galvanized several key organizations to work together to benefit our community long into the future.”

The Center’s own efforts on gang intervention include initiating the South King County Coordinating Council on Gangs, which is working toward a comprehensive and cooperative process to address gangs throughout communities in South King County and Bellevue.

Partnering with the YMCA and the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, A Better Seattle – also supported by Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer – promotes and funds efforts to deploy former street youth as outreach workers to intervene directly with vulnerable young people. The goal is to help youth avoid gangs or get out safely if they are already involved. The local effort builds upon the success of A Better L.A. Foundation, which Coach Carroll founded when he was coaching at USC.

“We are honored to receive the Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award,” Coach Carroll said. “Our work with A Better Seattle and A Better L.A. is in the spirit of what Mr. Maleng believed. And that work is built on the notion that the greatest of things can happen for young people – especially for the most at-risk and oftentimes overlooked young people – if we provide them with a little coaching and direction. Our street outreach workers are transforming our community by reducing violence and connecting with young people in a way that creates hope and helps them understand what they can become.”

Named in honor of the late King County Prosecuting Attorney, the Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award recognizes those who show exemplary leadership, dedication and commitment to the youth and families of Washington state. Previous recipients include the Maleng family, the law firm Perkins Coie LLC, Anne Ramsay-Jenkins of the College Success Foundation and Jim Mallahan.

In addition to the award presentation, the breakfast will include a keynote address by Gerald Hankerson, who at 18 was convicted of being an accessory to murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Behind bars, he earned his high school diploma, started a program for at-risk youth, participated in a variety of causes aimed at bettering inmates’ lives, and became an advocate for justice system reforms. In 2009, after 22 years in prison, his bid for clemency was successful, and today he works to spread the message that “good things happen when you take personal responsibility for your actions and make good choices.”

Guests at the March 1 event are asked to make a tax-deductible contribution of $150 or more. To register or to learn more, visit the website at www.ccyj.org.

Founded in 2006, the Center for Children & Youth Justice is a nonprofit organization dedicated to shaping better lives for children and youth involved in Washington’s foster care and juvenile justice systems. In partnership with parents, advocates and policymakers, the Center develops and advances innovative approaches to systemic changes that will support kids, stabilize families and strengthen communities.

Coca-Cola is calling all families to go out and play this summer as part of the second annual America Is Your Park campaign. Families also can vote for their favorite park to win the title of “America’s Favorite Park” and a $100,000 recreation grant made possible by the Coca‑Cola Live Positively initiative. The campaign, which launched this summer, was developed in collaboration with the National Park Foundation, America’s State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association.

“Last year, millions of Americans showed their passion for their favorite parks by voting, so this year we’ve raised the stakes – more parks can win and there are more ways to vote,” said L. Celeste Bottorff, Vice President, Living Well, Coca-Cola North America. “We’re asking people to be ‘digital’ by voting online for their favorite park and then get ‘physical’ by getting out and having fun with us this summer.”

This summer, people can go to LivePositvely.com to help their favorite national, state or local park win big with just a click of a button. The three parks that receive the most votes by September 6, 2011, will be awarded recreation grants in the following amounts: First Place – $100,000; Second Place – $50,000; and, Third Place – $25,000.These grants will help restore, rebuild or enhance recreation areas in parks where people can play and be active.

The campaign also encourages people to attend active healthy living events at local parks in select cities this summer. Additionally, people can watch, download and share fitness-in-the-park videos from LivePositively.com featuring fitness icon Jake Steinfeld, founder of “Body By Jake.”

Last year, thanks to more than 1.6 million votes cast by its supporters, Bear Head Lake State Park in Ely, Minnesota was named “America’s Favorite Park.” The park is using the recreation grant to build a new warming hut to ensure safety and comfort for winter sports enthusiasts all season long.

For more than 40 years, Coca-Cola has supported America’s parks through partnerships with individual parks and national park organizations. The Company has donated more than $14 million for restoration and renovation of our country’s parks, including the restoration of more than 260 miles of “Active Trails” for families to hike and explore, and development of the first sustainable recycling program at The National Mall, a national park in the heart of Washington, D.C. Most recently, Coca-Cola donated $1 million to The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation’s Peopling of America® Center, a new initiative that will tell the story of the immigration experience in America.

About America Is Your Park

Through September 6, 2011, people can go to LivePositively.com to cast a vote for their favorite park. Americans can vote in the following ways: Click on their favorite park and vote, upload photos of themselves in their favorite park or “check in” from the park using Facebook Places. And, starting August 10, they can also upload video of themselves in their favorite park. To learn more about Coca-Cola’s efforts in our nation’s parks, vote for your favorite park or to download helpful tools to motivate your community to vote, visit www.livepositively.com.

The three year long partnership kicks off this season.

“Partnering with our home team, the Seattle Sounders, seemed the perfect way to celebrate our 30th birthday as Seattle’s original craft brewer,” said Robert Rentsch, brand manager for Redhook Ale Brewery. “We are psyched about the opportunity to give soccer fans the chance to root for their favorite team while drinking a great beer. We all know you can’t give your full 90 with a parched throat.”

Redhook Ale Brewery was established in 1981 in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The brewery has gone on to be recognized as a craft brewing pioneer with distribution throughout the U.S. Maintaining its Pacific Northwest roots, Redhook’s West Coast brewery is located in Woodinville, Wash.

About Redhook

Redhook was born out of the energy and spirit of the early 80’s in the heart of Seattle. While the term didn’t exist at the time, Redhook became one of America’s first “craft” breweries. From a modest start in a former transmission shop in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard, to the current breweries in Woodinville, Wash. and Portsmouth, N.H., Redhook has become one of America’s most recognized craft breweries. While Redhook has “grown up” over the past 30 years, one thing has never changed – it’s still brewing great beers like ESB, Long Hammer IPA, Copperhook, and seasonal brews. Most importantly, Redhook makes sure it has fun doing it. Redhook’s beers are available in both draught and bottles and are distributed nationally through a network of wholesale distributors. For more information, visit www.redhook.com.

With King Felix starting on the hill for the Mariners against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight at Safeco Field, there was reason to think that the M’s might just get their first home win of the season. But by the sixth inning, the home team was down 7-0 and Hernandez was out of the game with an “L” looming.

They’d been getting guys on base all night, but were unable to score until Milton Bradley hit a solo home run in the 7th. In the 8th, the Blue Jay’s bullpen imploded, walking in three runs in a row and the M’s scored 5, bringing the score to 7-6 Toronto going into the 9th. After three straight outs for the Blue Jays in the 9th, Michael Saunders led off the bottom of the 9th with a stand up double. He was moved over to 3rd on an excellent sacrifice bunt by Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan. Ichiro was walked intentionally and then stole 2nd when Toronto fell asleep in the field. Pinch hitter Adam Kennedy got a big chance, stepping to the plate with 1 out and the winning run on 2nd – but couldn’t get the job done, grounding out to short.

Up comes Luis Rodriquez, who earlier in the game had replaced an injured Chone Figgins at third base. Rodriquez turns in THE BEST at bat of the season for the Seattle Mariners, having fouled off numerous pitches with two strikes before lining the game winner in right center field, scoring the tying and winning runs. Great job Luis!

Tip for tomorrow: Tomorrow against the Blue Jays, go see Michael Pineda pitch his first game at Safeco Field. This guy is going to be amazing! He’s huge too – I saw him standing next to Felix on opening day and he made Felix look small.

It’s been a festive night after a sunny afternoon here at Safeco Field in Seattle. Gametime – first pitch at 7:19 pm – no wind. Stadium roof is OPEN. Temperature at 53 degrees and sure to drop …

In the top of the first, the Indians 2nd hitter, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, lined a solo homerun into the left field bleachers off Mariners starter Jason Vargas. 1-0 Cleveland

It is the bottom of the first inning and Ichiro is leading off for the M’s. Groundball base hit up the middle. Ichiro on first with no outs.

The pre-game ceremonies were really cool this year. Franklin Gutierez is injured and not at the game, but both he and Ichiro were awarded gold gloves, keeping the Mariners active streak of gold glovers alive at 21 straight seasons. What was really cool was to see Felix Hernandez be awarded his first (of many to come) Cy Young Award – and on his 25th birthday.

Chone Figgins lined to the third baseman, who easily doubles the breaking Ichiro off first. Two out. Milton Bradley goes down on strikes. Three outs and end of the first. Cleveland still up 1-0.

Travis Hafner leads off the 2nd for the Tribe and grounds weakly to 2nd. Next up for the Indians is Orland Cabrera, a two time gold glove winner. No gold glove would have caught that seeing eye single in shallow centerfield. Cabrera on first, not out. Left fielder Austin Kearns at the plate. Grounds into a 6-4-3 double play. Middle of the 2nd.

Mariner Designated Hitter, Jack Cust leads off the 2nd for the Mariners. He strikes out with a big swing that might have made the flag in centerfield move a bit. First baseman grounds weakly to 2nd on the first pitch he sees tonight. Two out and up comes Mariner catcher Miguel Olivo. Olivo works the count to 3-0 , now 3-1, now full count. Olivo fouls off another pitch, then cannot reach a slider on the outside part of the plate. Strike three, three outs. End of two innings.

Cleveland first bagger, Matt LaPorta leads off the 3rd for the visiting Indians and works the count to 3-2 before lining one foul – very close to being another homerun off Vargas, but Jason comes back to strike him out. Next up for the Indians in Jack Hannahan, their 3rd baseman. He works Vargas to a 3-0 count, now 3-1, then 3-2, before lining a one hopper over Ichiro’s head and off the wall for a stand up double. LaPorta on 2nd with one out and up comes Indian leadoff hitter, Michael Brantley, who, on the first pitch, moves LaPorta over to third with a groundout to the right side.

Now up comes Cabrera again, but this time up, he lines weakly to Ichiro in right field.

Now the top of the 4th with two singles, men on first and third with no out and DH Travis Hafner at the plate. Hafner breaks his back on a bleeder up the middle, drives in a run and now men on first and second with no outs. Orlando Cabrera is up and turns to bunt, fouling off the first offering from Vargas. He lines the next pitch (meatball?) into left center for the Indians 4th straight single. Another run scores and once again, men on first and second for Indian left fielder Austin Kearns. Kearns looks at the first two pitches – both balls well out of the strike zone. Third pitch is down in the dirt and it appears that Vargas may be losing it. Comes back with a strike, 3-1. Another strike. Full count. Kearns rips the full count pitch past the left fielder Bradley to the wall for a run scoring double. Indians up 4-0 with men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. LaPorta is up for the Tribe. He hits a sacrifice fly to Bradley in left, making the score 5-0 with only one out and a man on 2nd. Number nine hitter Hannahn comes up for the Indians and lines the first pitch into left center to score another run. Indians up 6-0 with one out and a man on first – still in the 4th.

It continues to get worse. Cather Carlos Santana hits a bases loaded drive into right field scoring two more runs. Now 8-0, with two outs and men on first and second with DH Travis Hafner back at the plate. Long fly ball on an 2-0 pitch into the stands over Ichiro’s head. Three runs socre on the homerun, now 11-0 with two outs and the bases cleared.

Orlando Cabrera steps up and lines the first pitch into left field. Cabrera on first with two down after 10 hits and 10 runs for the Indians in the 4th. Austin Kearns steps up to the plate and works a 2-2 count before a called third strike ends possibly the worst inning in Mariner history.

The PA announcer just said that the game is indeed a sell out, with paid attendance at 45, 272.

Top of the 5th, Cleveland up 11-0 with Matt LaPorta at the plate. LaPorta walks. Indians #9 hitter, third baseman Jack Hannahan is at the plate with LaPorta on first and no outs. Hannahan is making Seattle reliever Tom Wilhelmsen work. and takes the count to 3-2 before softly lining to Mariner center fielder Ryan Langerhans. One out, mnan on first and Brantley steps up and lines one behind the running into right field. Men on first and second with one out.

Cabrera strikes out on a wild pitch in the dirt and Mariners catcher Olivo throws the ball into center field in an attempt to catch the runner off base. Another run scores on the throwing error. Cleveland now up 12-0. Bottom of the 5th.
