The YMCA’s Free Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity, and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% and 71% in adults over age 60.
There is an upcoming group for the free diabetes prevention program starting at the Bellevue Family YMCA on May 18th meeting from 6-7pm. The group will meet 25 times over the course of 1 year. Membership is not required to the YMCA, but participants will receive 3 months of free membership by participating in the free diabetes prevention program.

Nationally, this free diabetes prevention program has gotten a lot of media attention, especially in the healthcare community. Local Bellevue and Eastside residents are encouraged to take part in this great program. Nothing captures the impact of the program more than the words of program participants:
“When I started this free diabetes prevention program, I barely had the energy I needed with three kids. I tried quick, fad diets but they didn’t work. I’d lose weight, and then gain it back. But this program is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle change. I loved the wealth of information I learned and I couldn’t wait to share it with my family. Our life has changed. I’ve lost 38 pounds, my husband lost 20, and my sons are requesting berry smoothies for dessert. My energy is through the roof and my family is living healthier.”

“I knew all the stats, had all the right information, and knew that I was at high risk but was not ready to commit to changing my life until I learned about this free diabetes prevention program. The small group component is what sold me. I really liked the idea of accountability. The group connection and accountability, for me, were the biggest piece. At age 50, I’ve lost 20 percent of my starting weight and now, at 142 pounds, I’m back to the size I was in college.”
