BELLEVUE, Wash. — Author, educator and community activist, Dr. Mona Lake Jones will address graduates as the keynote speaker for Bellevue College’s 49th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, June 17, in Seattle’s Key Arena.

 Jones, who has served as Poet Curator and Poet Laureate for the City of Seattle and Martin Luther King County, travels extensively throughout the country speaking on issues of culture and diversity.

“I am thrilled to be a part of Bellevue College’s 50th year celebration,” said Jones.  “Besides congratulating the graduates for the life stories they have written thus far, I will prompt them to think about the next chapters in their book.”

Jones is well known for her books, The Color of Culture, The Color of Culture II, The Color of Culture III, and Unleashing the Power of a Sister.  Her forthcoming work, Nectar from Grandhoney will be released this summer. Her 1992 poem, A Roomful of Sisters was commissioned by 100 Black Women of Boston, a national civic group, and exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. [Read more…]

Alonda Williams Hired as New Director of Marketing at Bellevue College

Bellevue College (BC) has named Alonda Williams as the new director of marketing, community relations and enrollment management marketing. In this role, she will provide leadership and supervision for all marketing and communications outreach, enrollment and retention marketing and the college’s ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.

“Alonda brings an impressive cache of experience that will contribute significantly to the college’s strategic foci on enrollment management, community partnerships and brand enhancements,” said Dr. Gayle Barge, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at BC. “Her diverse business acumen provides an excellent foundation for leading our marketing and creative team.”

Williams, a seasoned marketing professional with over 20 years of marketing leadership experience with several Fortune 50 companies, comes to Bellevue College from Microsoft where she most recently served as Senior Director, Education Marketing.  In this role, she and her team were responsible for building and executing integrated marketing campaigns for IT Pro, Teacher and Student in both Higher Ed and K-12. During her tenure, Microsoft developed marketing partnerships with NBC Education Nation, ISTE, EDUCAUSE, Scripps National Spelling Bee, and over 25 Colleges and Universities including several Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Prior to joining Microsoft, Williams worked in senior-level marketing positions for Qualcomm, Verizon Wireless and Bertelsmann.  [Read more…]

Video Game Tourney to spread message of Autism Acceptance

Bellevue College will hold the fifth-annual Autism Acceptance Video Game Tournament during National Autism Awareness Month on Saturday, April 9 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. to increase understanding about autism and raise community awareness of its innovative Autism Spectrum Navigators program.

The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors will play a free concert Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Courter Family Athletic Pavilion on the Bellevue College (BC) campus.

The Jazz Ambassadors is the official touring big band of the United States Army. The 19-member ensemble has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, standards, popular tunes, Dixieland, vocals, and patriotic selections. [Read more…]
