BELLEVUE, Wash. — Author, educator and community activist, Dr. Mona Lake Jones will address graduates as the keynote speaker for Bellevue College’s 49th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, June 17, in Seattle’s Key Arena.

 Jones, who has served as Poet Curator and Poet Laureate for the City of Seattle and Martin Luther King County, travels extensively throughout the country speaking on issues of culture and diversity.

“I am thrilled to be a part of Bellevue College’s 50th year celebration,” said Jones.  “Besides congratulating the graduates for the life stories they have written thus far, I will prompt them to think about the next chapters in their book.”

Jones is well known for her books, The Color of Culture, The Color of Culture II, The Color of Culture III, and Unleashing the Power of a Sister.  Her forthcoming work, Nectar from Grandhoney will be released this summer. Her 1992 poem, A Roomful of Sisters was commissioned by 100 Black Women of Boston, a national civic group, and exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. [Read more…]

2016 Commencement Highlights WGU Washington’s Five Years of Success

WGU Washington 2016 InfographicNext week,WGU Washington will award nearly 1,900 bachelor’s and master’s degrees to the members of its 2016 graduating class. The nonprofit, online university – which is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year – provides a high-quality, low-cost educational option for Washingtonians, including midcareer professionals and underserved populations.

The diversity among WGU Washington’s student body is evident in the Class of 2016.

The average age of this year’s graduates is 39. While the youngest is 20, the oldest is Mike Brown, a 77-year-old MBA grad from Spokane. [Read more…]

Sherman Alexie to speak at University of Washington Bothell’s 25th Commencement

Author Sherman AlexieNoted author, poet and screenwriter Sherman Alexie will deliver the commencement address to the 2016 graduating class of the University of Washington Bothell. 

The 25th Commencement Ceremony is expected to be the university’s largest to date with about 1,300 of the 1,800 spring grads participating. The ceremony will take place at 1:45 p.m. on June 12 at UW Seattle’s Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.  [Read more…]

WGU Washington to Award Record Number of Degrees during Fifth Annual Commencement Ceremony

WGU Washington will award nearly 1,900 bachelor’s and master’s degrees to students from across the state at its fifth annual commencement ceremony Saturday, April 16. The class of 2016 is online university’s largest since it was founded five years ago.

The 2016 graduating class is roughly 12 percent larger than last year’s class of 1,700 graduates. [Read more…]
