Long time industry leaders Brian Carter and Jerry Judkins-Smith were added to the Board of Directors of the Washington Wine Industry Foundation.
Brian Carter is the owner and winemaker of Brian Carter Cellars. Brian arrived in Washington in 1980 when there were 16 wineries. Brian studied microbiology at Oregon State University then on to the University of California-Davis School of Enology where he had stints at Mount Eden Vineyard and Chateau Montelena. He returned to Washington to join Paul Thomas Winery.
Brian was twice named “Winemaker of the Year” by Washington Magazine, and is the only three-time recipient of the Pacific Northwest Enological Society’s Grand Prize. Brian was the Honored Vintner at the 2007 Auction of Washington Wines, and received an Industry Service Award from the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers.
Jerry Judkins-Smith is the principal at Sphere Foods as well as co-owner and president of Inland Desert, Inc. Sphere Foods imports and exports juices and natural colorants which Jerry grew from the ground up with sales now spanning the US, Argentina, South Africa and Australia. He was awarded “supplier of the year” from Ocean Spray for his innovative ideas.
Along with Sphere Foods, Jerry focused into the area where he grew up, leading Inland Desert Nursery to six million certified clean vines, vineyards and mother blocks that are growing clean plant material along with a certified organic cherry orchard. Jerry expanded facilities to allow year-round employment for crews and increased quality controls that support sustainable agriculture practices.
Two board members retired off the board including Greg Lill of DeLille Cellars, who served nine years and Bradley Walker of Walker & Associates, who served three.
